Our story continues!

In the fall of 2022, Melia & Justin were approached by local music educator and violinist Michele Venegas about carrying on the legacy of her 15-year-old business Joyful Sounds Music Studio, which offers early childhood group music classes in GR’s Eastown neighborhood. Melia & Justin officially took over ownership and operations of Joyful Sounds on June 1, 2023. As a part of this acquisition, Yellow Door assumed the private lesson element of Joyful Sounds, allowing us to add a new private teacher, expand our offerings through the addition of violin lessons, and serve the community in a new location. We’re excited about what the future holds for Yellow Door and Joyful Sounds!

Melia & Justin Sneden Colwell

The Sneden Colwells met in 2012 when Justin was assigned to be Melia’s accompanist for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21. They loved making music together and, well, the rest is history! Throughout their time together at Indiana Wesleyan University, they accompanied each other and performed duets for master class and recital performances. They even performed at their own wedding in 2015!

In 2016, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where Justin earned his master's degree in Piano Performance and Melia worked as a Manager of Education at a children’s museum. During evening walks in the park, their dream of Yellow Door Music Studio took shape. They envisioned a home studio space for eager and dedicated piano students and their families, a place where music was celebrated and nurtured, a studio where students were viewed holistically and hopefully. Eager to return to Melia’s home of West Michigan to put that dream into action, they founded Yellow Door Music Studio in the fall of 2019.
